I used the Hakkalugi for the recent Nokia Coast to Coast event (105 miles across Scoltland biking, kayaking and running). We had to use the same bike throughout and the route included 81 miles biking of which 16 miles was off-road. The bike is incredibly light and fast on tarmac and equally at home off-road. The off-road section consisted of both farm track routes and singletrack which was as challenging as any of the bike routes at Glentress. On top of this the route was incredibly muddy and slippy following constant rain and proved to be challenging for any biker no matter how good a MBR'r or what MTB they may have used. The Hakkalugi handled it as well as any MTB (clearly helped by a talented rider!!), cutting through the mud and finding traction at every corner, riding through and over the rocks and generally being a joy to ride.
I used to think I was an out and out MTBer and always would be. However the fun I had burning people up both on the on and off-road sections has had me checking the internet for cyclcross and any other adventure races I could enter to justify the purchase of one. What more can I say as a glowing endorsement for a great bike.... Robbo |
