Fixie, singlespeedy type idea for this town classic.
Surly are a new brand to TBC (Dec 2009) - we saw their stuff at a couple of shows and liked what they did but didnt pay a whole lot of attention.
One day the nice man Pat from Ison Distribution came to visit and bought us some muffins and the pricing strucure was revealed to us. The fact that we were all wrong in our perception of the brand meant we just had to get them in.
The Steam Roller is the 700c wheeled single speed/fixie in the range. It comes with a front and rear brake but only the front is fitted and it is shipped as a fixie. If you want it as a single speed free wheel (what we would advise!!!) then let us know and we will do whats needed for you.
This features dropped bars rather than the new fad for flat bars so it makes an ideal town, commuter, training bike and features a 4130 cro-mo steel frame for strength and smooth ride feel.
This is at once an unfashionable fixie as it is plain and simple but at the same time deeply cool as it is honest and true to the tradition of what they should be.
It comes in Cream and Black and a good range of sizes.
Here is the official line from the Surly website:
"Ah, the Steamroller. What a sublime ride. We love it and so do a lot of other people. It was designed as a singlespeed/fixed gear street bike, and it’s as fine an urban trawler as you will find. The 4130 CroMo frame is quick like a bunny, and durable too, as an evryday street bike should be. We include 25mm tires, but the frame will accept tires up to about 38mm and that opens up all sorts of possibilities. Asphalt isn't necessarily smoother than singletrack, afterall. We offer it as a fixed gear but the hub is threaded fixie on one side, with SS freewheel threads on the other, so you could add a single speed freewheel if you'd rather do that. We include front and rear brakes because having brakes is a good idea, but there are no rear housing stops. There's not much else either. Just a pair of water bottle cage bosses on the seat tube. And hey! No snivelling about the location. Seat tube, down tube, nobody can agree on anything. Criminy. "
